Simon is an Environmental Engineer, Director and part owner of Katestone Environmental with more than ten years experience in the private and public sectors.

He graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1994.

His expertise includes: air quality impact assessment of major industrial, infrastructure and mining projects; licensing, approvals and regulations; peer review and advice on air quality planning matters; odour impact assessment; greenhouse and air pollution control and management. Simon also provides expert witness services for matters relating to air quality and odour assessment in the Planning and Environment Court and other courts.

Andrew Balch B.Sc.(Atmos.Sci)
Principal Air Quality Consultant

Andrew has worked in the air quality consulting field since 1996. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science and a Geomorphology degree from Macquarie University.

He has vast experience in designing, managing and performing air pollutant and odour impact assessment studies for a large range of industries throughout Australia and overseas, including mineral and chemical processing, manufacturing, agricultural, food processing, wastewater treatment, and waste processing and composting.

Andrew’s experience in impact assessment is based in both field and modelling techniques, particularly Ausplume, Calmet/Calpuff and TAPM.

Natalie Shaw B.App.Sc.,M.App.Sc.
Senior Air Quality Consultant

Natalie has worked in the air quality field since graduating from Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemistry in 1998.

She completed her Masters of Applied Science in 2003. Her Masters Project looked at modelling the meteorological processes in the Southeast Queensland airshed using The Air Pollution Model.

Natalie has particular expertise in mathematical interpolation and air quality modelling. She has undertaken studies considering the potential for photochemical smog and interregional transport of power station plumes in Queensland and New South Wales, working closely with the CSIRO.

Natalie has also served for a number of years as an office bearer for the National Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Lena Jackson B.Sc.(AES)
Senior Air Quality Consultant

Lena joined Katestone Environmental after graduating from Griffith University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Studies.

She has wide ranging experience in atmospheric modelling, having been responsible for air quality assessments of various major industries throughout Australia and wind energy modelling for most Australian states.

Lena has been involved in meteorological and pollution monitoring studies and has expertise in the use of numerical and statistical models for the forecasting of atmospheric processes and pollutant dispersion.

Dr Frank Quintarelli B.Sc.(Ed),B.Sc.(Hons),Ph.D
Software Development Manager

Frank is a scientific programmer with extensive background knowledge in meteorology.

Frank completed a PhD in acoustic remote sensing in 1987 from Melbourne University and has worked for many years as a lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology.

Since joining Katestone in 2000 Frank has designed and constructed several software packages for both external and internal use. Frank has been heavily involved with the Katestone Environmental/Meat and Livestock Australia heat load forecasting service for the cattle feedlot industry, a web based service that Katestone has provided since 2001.

Alex Schloss B.App.Sc.(Env Sc),B.InfoTech
Air Quality Consultant

Alex completed Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Science) and Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Engineering and Data Communications) degrees at the Queensland University of Technology in 2006.

Alex started work part time at Katestone before completing his degree and has worked full time since the end of 2006.

With Alex’s unique skill base of environmental science and information technology he has implemented new systems to ensure dispersion modelling projects and data analysis is undertaken in a consistent and time efficient manner. Alex is proficient in the use of Ausplume and TAPM has been involved in a wide range of air quality assessments.

Kim Henville B.Sc.(Hons),PG.Dip.Ed.
Air Quality Consultant

Kim graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Chemistry in 1996.

For four years as a research scientist, her role consisted of the screening of supported metal catalysts for NOx abatement activity during which she gained extensive experience in gas analysis techniques. She is currently completing a PhD in atmospheric chemistry, characterising urban air in the Port Phillip air-shed using FTIR spectrometry.

Since joining Katestone in 2007 Kim has developed skills in dispersion modelling, particularly traffic models, data analysis and has been involved in a wide range of air quality assessments.

Andrew Wiebe B.Sc.(Hons)Phys.Geo.
Air Quality Consultant

Andrew has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography and Biology degree, with Honours in Physical Geography, from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

His honours dissertation was titled ‘Wavelet Analysis of Atmospheric Turbulence over a Coral Reef’, and involved the study of the decomposition of atmospheric signals using wavelet analysis to determine the characteristics of the exchange of momentum, heat, moisture and trace gases, such as carbon dioxide, at the atmosphere-ocean-reef interface.

Andrew’s expertise includes atmospheric numerical modelling, using models such as TAPM and the Weather Research Forecasting Model (WRF) to simulate and interpret airflow in complex terrain.

Andrew joined Katestone in 2008 and has enhanced the capabilities and core abilities of the Katestone modelling team.
